Gratitude Day 35 - Water

Dear Friends,
Imagine, on the weekend there was no water in my fancy building for 8 hours! A few units, here and there had water, but I was among the unlucky ones! And there I was, just the other day, so grateful for "running water!" Maybe, Bruce Almighty having detected the "pinch" of sarcasm in my gratitude, wanted to teach me a lesson! In preparation for going out to dinner, I had to take the elevator four times to the ground floor and fill up two plastic bottles with long necks that didn't quite fit under the tap. And then I was faced with a dilemma: with so little water to spare, what should take precedence; brushing the teeth, washing the armpits or flushing the toilette? The unpleasantness of the whole experience brought to my mind images of women and children who have to, under the burning sun, carry pails of water on their head or shoulders only to start the exhausting journey the following day. I felt ashamed. Very quickly, my grumpiness gave way to sincere feelings of empathy for those less fortunate.
What else did I learn from this experience? No, it's not delete sarcasm from my writing. It's more profound. I learnt that, just because I'm grateful for something, it doesn't mean it cannot be taken away from me. And that was a somewhat bitter realisation which led me to philosophise further. The precise reason for which I should be counting my blessings is the fact that they can be taken away from me, sometimes as fast as a blink of an eye! I remain grateful for all I have.
Have a day filled with blessings and empathy everyone!
